After the declaration of result of JEE Advanced, many students get Preparatory rank instead of CRL Rank. due to preparatory rank they can not take direct admission in regular courses of IITs. Instead of it students having preparatory rank in JEE advanced result, they get preparatory course. What is Preparatory Course in IIT? 

Preparatory course is the one year course offered by IITs to those students who have near to cut-off list but actually they have not qualified JEE Advanced. Preparatory course is totally different from general course like B.Tech or BS in IITs. Although, Preparatory course is conducted as same as general course is conducted in terms of semester examination and teachers, internal examination, activity etc. After successfully passing this course, students get direct admission in alloted IITs and Branch during JoSAA Counselling.

Who is eligible for Preparatory Course in IITs?

ST/SC/PWD* students who get preparatory rank is only eligible for Preparatory course. 

Preparatory course is only made for ST/SC and PWd of all Categories. On the basis of Preparatory rank students get preparatory course in IITs.

Preparatory Course rank list Cutoff

According to Jee Advanced 2022 qualifying Cutoff marks, to get Preparatory course students should meet following criteria-
  • atleast 1 marks in each subject mathematics, Chemestry and Physics.
  • atleast 14 marks total in all subject.

Should we take Preparatory course in IITs or not?

Here is the few points are given through which you can decide whether you should take preparatory course or not.
  • If you get Preparatory rank in JEE advanced result score card then you are eligible to take 1-Year preparatory course in IITs through Josaa Counselling.
  • If you are not getting better branch or college in IITs and if you have better score in the Jee Main then choose NIT instead of choosing Preparatory course in IIT, if you wish.
  • If you are not getting better branch or college in IITs and also you have not better score in the Jee Main then you should take drop of one year if you have still one chance of appearing in JEE Advanced.
  • If you are getting your choice branch or college in IITs then you should take preparatory course.
  • If you are not getting better branch or college in IITs and also you have not better score  in the Jee Main and your family condition is not much better then you should take preparatory course. 
  • Keep in mind that you can also give your Jee paper with already having preparatory course if you have still one chance of appearing in JEE Advanced for better branch.

Why preparatory course is given in IITs?

Many students belonging to ST/SC/PWD do not get proper fascility or resources  or environment to study better. due to this many of them do not able to prepare well for Jee Advanced. So, they do not get good mark to qualify JEE Advanced for regular courses. 
Due to this many seats in IITs get blanked, to maintain or improve selection of Sc/ST/PWD candidates Preparatory rank is made to give them preparatory course in IITs. Through Preparatory courses, students get direct admission in IITs next year if they qualify this course.

Preparatory Course Structure in IITs like subject, exam etc.

If you get preparatory course then you have to follow following procedure in IITs College.
  • Students have to study Subjects of Physics, Chemestry, Mathematics and English.
  • Physics, Chemestry and Mathematics consists topic of 11th and 12th in prep Course.
  • Like other general course students also have to attend lecture and complete internal activity given subject professor.
  • Like other B.tech course preparatory students have to give semester examination n.
  • Semester Examination paper is made by professors that is neither tough or easy. Preparatory Semester paper is Subjective type. In simple word we can say it is tougher than JEE Main examination and quite easier than JEE Advanced paper depending on respective Professors.

Preparatory Course fees in IITs

When students take preparatory course in IITs then they have to pay same fees as regular B.Tech first Year students have to pay. Fees varies College to College.
